Default Mode Network

The default mode network is a set of brain areas responsible for thinking about the past, the future, and what others think of you. These areas are usually active when you are not particularly focused on anything and are responsible for unhappiness. Studies show that focusing on difficult tasks from time to time reduces activity in the network's default mode. Studies show also that meditation reduces network activity by default. The default mode network explains why we are often unhappy when we are not engaged in any work because our brain wanders and finds reasons to be unhappy. It also explains why meditation is a good way to help us be happy because it trains us to make those thoughts responsible for our unhappiness.
